Secondary English Teaching: A Survival Manual

How did the book come about?
A good friend and Home Economics teacher returned from leave in 2006 to be given an English class to teach after having never taught the subject before. She rang me for advice on how to get started. When I tried to think of a book to which I could refer her, none came to mind - and so the idea for the Survival Manual was born.
At the same time, I was becoming increasingly concerned about the way my daughter’s school taught English. It was clear that they were struggling to understand how to implement the state curriculum. Shortly after, I spent 18 hours reviewing on-line English resources for an education authority. While the units and activities on the site were often interesting and even creative, I was often left wondering what the students were supposed to be learning about using English. Individual activities were often fun, but had no clear focus.
I became convinced of the need for a practical book, directed at teachers, that would model effective and focussed learning activities for the English classroom.
