Retirement of Dr Wendy Morgan

One of the most prominent and influential academics in the field of English retires from her position at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) at the end of this year.

Dr Wendy Morgan, patron of the English Teachers’ Association of Queensland, was made a Life Member of the Australian Association for Teachers of English at the 2005 National English Conference on the Gold Coast.

Her generous spirit and sharp intellect will be missed. Despite the call of her rainforest garden in the Gold Coast Hinterland, she promises that retirement does not mean she will be withdrawing from her professional involvement completely.

Coming to QUT from the Wilderness School in Adelaide, Dr Morgan has been influential in promoting Critical approaches to English, leading the team which presented Australia’s first large scale seminar on Critical Literacy in 1996.

Her work on Critical Literacy and post-modern approaches to English teaching are respected world wide.

Recently, along with Dr Ray Misson, Dr Morgan has reconceptualised Critical Literacy in order for the aesthetic to be given a prominent role. This work culminated in the July release of Critical Literacy and the Aesthetic: Transforming the English Classroom.

Dr Morgan also has an intense interest in the effects of computer technology on writing and reading practices, and has still managed to find time for her love of art and poetry (see www.styluspoetryjournal.com).
